Many might bemoan the muscle car as going the way of the dodo and the dinosaurs it burns, but for many, there is no replacing the rumble and feel of a truly opened up big block. On the street or out in the bush, these sounds and the butt-rumble they create through the seats is viscerally engaging. Still, the point of the Ram TRX is to go really, really fast while emitting very satisfying engine growls and exhaust snarls as it does so. The articulation of the Raptor is hard to beat and the TRX seems a little shy in that department. Where it gets tricky is in real-world truck use and in some types of hardcore off-roading, such as climbing rocks or traversing difficult terrain. All of those things romp the capabilities of the Ford Raptor by wide margins. The T-Rex has a lot more power, strong capability, and extreme speed. The goal is well met, on paper, and is pretty well executed in real life. The aim of the Ram 1500 TRX is clear: put the Ford Raptor in its place. Easter egg graphics under the hood, behind the center console storage cover, and elsewhere show a Tyrannosaurus rex munching on a Velociraptor in etched detail. Aimed at the off-road crowd and cheerily labeled a “Raptor killer” by Ram Truck and its public relations team, the T-Rex adds wide-body fenders, 35-inch tires, a sport-tuned off-road suspension, reinforced framing, and a two-inch (5.08-cm) lift. The TRX takes the Ram 1500, already a well-done pickup truck, and adds in a Hellcat 6.2-liter supercharged V8 with 702 horses and 650 lb-ft (881 Nm) of torque. They’ll be quicker and far more efficient, and they’ll soon make dinosaurs like the TRX extinct. The 20 TRX, affectionately called the T-Rex and with Easter egg graphics to encourage that moniker, boasts 702 horsepower (523.4 kW) and a 0-60-mph (0-96.5-km/h) sprint of about 4.5 seconds. By the end of the year, there will be at least one, if not more, electric pickup trucks that can do 0-60 mph in 3.5 or even 3.0 seconds. The 20 TRX plants its flag and roars as the ultimate predator, but this is the end. But it won’t matter because at that point it’s just a game of one-upmanship. Maybe the TRX will get the Hellcat Redeye’s 797-hp engine to counter the Raptor R. It’ll likely have the supercharged 5.2-liter V-8 from the Mustang Shelby GT500 with slightly more power than the TRX. Sure, the 2022 Ford F-150 Raptor R is coming. The TRX is about as powerful as a gas-powered truck will get. Hope your neighbors can stomach loud trucks. This actually enhances the supercharger whine, which is always present and always loud. Ram revised the air intake compared to all other Hellcat models to keep dust and dirt out of the engine and to accommodate water fording. The exhaust note could wake the dead upon cold start, and boy does it sound angry. The TRX and Raptor are technically designed for such antics.Įditorial Director Marty Padgett once said Hellcats are “grandmas screaming on cell phones loud.” If that's true, the TRX is an entire nursing home screaming at the TV screen loud. Extra weight is also a detriment when performing off-road jumps. It drinks gas like a college kid at a frat party, and the TRX is never light on its feet whereas the Raptor feels a bit lighter than it is. That heft does it no favors for handling or efficiency. 20 TRX I Photography by Allex Bellus PhotographyĬarrying all that weight, the TRX feels more substantial than a Raptor, like it was cut from a block of steel, which instills confidence that this thing is built to take a massive beating.
